Mass Timber Modular

For Northern Communities

The study probes into the various benefits of utilizing mass timber and modular design in constructing infrastructure for workforce communities. This not only encompasses health advantages but also underscores its low carbon and environmental benefits along with steadfast, long-term durability for resiliency in Canada’s north.

In anticipation of a forthcoming wave of mineral exploration and processing, Studio VMA has meticulously crafted an in-depth feasibility study for the Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC).

Our design strategy is steadfastly dedicated to spotlighting the diverse benefits of deploying Mass Timber in the establishment of workforce communities and mining camps. A lens is particularly focused on the environmental, health, and economic dimensions of such ventures. Central to this initiative is the unveiling of a prototype design for modular Mass Timber living quarters and auxiliary structures, scrupulously engineered to cater to the distinct demands of upcoming mining communities in Canada’s northern territories.

Through a rigorous evaluation of financial feasibility and embodied carbon metrics, our objective is to weave a compelling narrative for Mass Timber as a foundational element of sustainable and economically responsible development. We aspire to showcase how this innovative construction material can coalesce with Canada’s bioeconomy, championing for wise resource management whilst fostering prosperous, resilient communities.
